I aways dread when these storms are forecasted. I really do! My 6 year old has a phobia for them. He gets totally petrified at the onset of a thunderstorm. Just noticing the trees dancing in the wind and rain will trigger his phobia. He uses his bedroom or the den (storage room) to take cover. And either myself, his dad or brother always keep him company until the storm has subsided.
I thought I'd make a little video of today's thunderstorm. It was captured using my Android phone & uploaded to You Tube. The quality isn't the greatest since it was done from my dining room window. The moquito screen kept getting in the way.O_o
Anyways, my little one's fear commences from the moment he discovers one of these fierce storms is forcasted and will make it his duty to relate this to us. "Mom or Dad, did you know that the thunderstorms are coming at ------ time today?" :-)
As a child, I too was very scared of these storms but unlike him I'd cover my head with a pillow....lol Him on the other hand, gets shaky with the shivers. There's no secret that it scares him like nothing else. And I'm hoping at some point he will build up the courage to watch this video with us. I acknowledge he's only 6 years old but would like him to eventually embrace his fear of thunderstorms and understand that is isn't going to hurt him providing he isn't standing under a tree while there's a lightning show.
Are you scared or thunderstorms or do you have a child that suffers from this form of phobia?
Please share your experiences in the comment section. I'd love to hear them.

It's funny, because I just updated my Facebook page about how much I love the rain and thunderstorms. That being said there was one crack of thunder today that scared all 5 of us!
ReplyDeleteI think maybe because I like them so much my kids don't have any issues with them, but believe me, they are afraid of plenty of other things lol!
What a coincidence, Lisa. We both had the weather on our minds today...lol Well, in my case, I had no choice since I was trying to keep my little one calm. In all honesty, we do need the rain. It's been so humid this Summer.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, you don't have to deal with this sort of situation...lol
